WARRENSBURG - Clouds of ice shards will be flying in rooster-tails behind speeding vintage snowmobiles, as they careen around Echo Lake Saturday.
As many as 500 or 600 snowmobile enthusiasts from upstate New York and neighboring states are expected to attend this year's second installment of an annual race series here sanctioned by the Northern New York Vintage Snowsled Association. The competition will feature an estimated 100 or more vintage snowmobiles.
Events are headquartered at Echo Lake Lodge, located off Hudson St., which will have a variety of food and drinks available.
Spectators can either view the races from the Lodge's deck, or from the shores of the lake.
As of Tuesday, weather on Saturday was expected to be sunny and mild, which is likely to bring out a large crowd. The first race this season, held in mid-February, was well attended, race organizers said.
The young members of the Warrensburg Wrestling Club, which sponsors the races, work at the event, and proceeds of the gate go towards supporting the Club's activities.
The Club has bought wrestling mats and other related equipment for the schools, plus it purchases uniforms for wrestlers on a limited budget. Also, the club shoulders expenses for travel to meets and tournaments, on behalf of wrestlers from 4 years old through high school.
The Vintage Snowsled races are the wrestling club's biggest fundraiser. Local wrestlers help conduct the event by setting up the race tracks on Echo Lake and manning the parking areas for the event.
