PLATTSBURGH - The Plattsburgh Public Library is welcoming spring by celebrating the blooming and blossoming of spring flowers.
The Friends of the Library, a group whose mission is to "provide support to the library,"will host an eight-week juried art exhibit at the library, 19 Oak St., beginning Thursday, April 2, focusing on "blossoms and blooms."
The group, which has put on the exhibit for a number of years, is inviting those interested in being featured to bring their framed photography to the library this Monday, March 30, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The only stipulation: the photography must contain flowers.
"The idea being that spring is coming and therefore we would anticipate there would be lots and lots of flowers," said library director Stanley A. Ransom. "Therefore, to help bring this on, the friends have started the blooms and blossoms art show so that whether you're a photographer or an artist ... you can display your creation of the blooms and blossoms that help to harold spring."
Those who choose to exhibit art in the show must have pieces already framed and ready for hanging. Ransom said the library provides museum gallery rods "so it's done the right way." There is also a $3 gallery fee and each participant may submit up to three works of art.
"I think it's a great idea to welcome in spring this way," he said. "What it does is to encourage photographers and artists ... to develop the themes of flowers and floral paintings, which everybody can enjoy with the coming of spring. So it's a real kind of spring rite to have blooms and blossoms here at the library and we like to help the public welcome spring."
The exhibit will run through Friday, May 29. There is a $100 grand prize, $50 second prize and $25 third prize for the top three places in both photography and painting.
Judging will be held Wednesday, April 8, followed by a reception at 5 p.m.
