Men battle to draw while the women kept playoff hopes alive COLCHESTER Saint Michaels' men's soccer (9-2-4, 4-2-4 NE-10) battled to their second consecutive 1-1 draw against Southern New Hampshire (4-4-5, NE-10 4-3-2) on Wednesday afternoon at Duffy field. Freshman Jack Killian (Leesburg, Va./Heritage) scored his first career goal on a free kick from senior Yoshikazu Ishii (Tokyo, Japan) with 36 ticks left on the clock to send the game into overtime. In a game dominated by Southern New Hampshire in the first half, Saint Michael's could not manage a shot on goal until the 89th minute when Ishii drilled a left-footed free kick across the box and off Killian's outstretched leg. For Ishii, the leading point-scorer for Saint Michael's on the year, it was his first assist of the season. Killian records his first collegiate goal in his sixth career game. Senior goalkeeper Tim Williamson (Wakefield, R.I./Barrington) registered four saves on 12 Penmen shots. Williamson's record on the year is now 7-2-2 with six shut outs. Southern New Hampshire's senior striker Gabe Mercier (Middleboro, Mass./Middleboro) registered four shots, including three on goal, but contributed to the box score with his second assist of the year finding freshman Daniel Hernandez (Salem, N.H./Salem) in the 31st minute for his first goal of the year. The Penmen pressured the Purple Knights with 12 total shots, seven of which came in the first half. For the women, it was Senior Day', and it was freshman Liz Freiberger (South Walpole, Mass./Walpole) who scored her first career goal two minutes into overtime to guide the Saint Michaels' women's soccer team(8-6-2, NE-10 4-6-2) past the Assumption Greyhounds (3-11-1, NE-10 2-10), 2-1 on a cold and rainy afternoon at Duffy Field in Colchester. Junior midfielder Sky Bryan (North Yarmouth, Maine/Greely) assisted Freiberger for the game-winner and scored a goal of her own in the 23rd minute. Before Saturday's game, Saint Michael's was two points out of a playoff spot with three games remaining in the regular season. Earning a 2-1 win over Assumption, the Purple Knights kept their playoff hopes alive and well. Bryan's goal was her second of the year and her assist was her fifth on the year. Making her last start at home in a Purple Knights uniform, senior goalkeeper Gillian Goldman (Stratham, N.H./Exeter) made one save in her second win of the season. For the Greyhounds, freshman goalkeeper Lauren Keating (Nashua, N.H.\Nashua North) kept Assumption in the game, making six saves, five in the first half under heavy fire. Sophomore Kelley DeWalt (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) scored her first goal of the year less than two minutes before the second half horn on an assist from freshman Nicole Ardine (East Walpole, Mass./Walpole). Currently out of playoff contention, Assumption returns to action at Pace University on Wednesday, October 16 at 3:30 p.m. The Purple Knights return to action on the road versus Bentley on Friday, October 19 at Bentley in Waltham, Massachusetts at 3 p.m.
