A hiker from the Binghamton area died while hiking in the Eastern High Peaks.
That’s according to a statement issued by Ray Brook-based state police Tuesday afternoon.
Investigators say 49-year-old Paul M. Gervais of Endicott was hiking Monday evening when he became ill on a trail just 150 yards away from the High Peaks Information Center in the Essex County town of North Elba.
Forest Rangers James Giglinto and Joseph LaPierre responded at about 9 p.m. and began assisting Gervais out of the woods. But he collapsed soon after and attempts to resuscitate him using CPR were unsuccessful.
Gervais was pronounced dead at the scene and his body was transported to the Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake by Essex County Coroner Walter Marvin.
An autopsy performed Tuesday by Dr. C. Francis Varga determined the cause of death to be heart-related problems. The manner of death was ruled as natural causes.
Troopers say Gervais was returning from a day-long hike in the High Peaks when the incident happened.
The Lake Placid Volunteer Ambulance Service provided assistance at the scene.
