BURLINGTON Raising and lowering the flag of the United States of America is the responsibility of the third graders at Mater Christi School. The flag is raised each morning, except when it is raining, on a pole located in front of the elementary school. Each year a new group of third graders learns not only how to raise and lower the flag but also the reasons for the respect which is accorded our nations symbol. To help with this learning experience, third grade teacher Faith Hubert, invited two members of the Vermont National Guard to meet with the two third class classes. The meeting took place on the schools lawn in order to have the space needed to demonstrate the correct handling and folding of the flag. Medic Sgt. David Boyle of South Burlington assisted by Medic Sgt. B. Silverstrim of Essex Junction discussed the history and use of various flags and then gave the students the opportunity to fold a flag correctly and respectfully. This activity also marked the beginning of a unit on government for the third graders and was particularly appropriate in view of the celebrations of Constitution, Citizenship and Patriots Days in September.
