The Southern Vermont Arts Center will be offering an Art Camp for children on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, October 21, 22, and 23 when the local public schools are closed for a teachers' convention. The camp is being offered for children in grades 1-6 and will run from 9 a.m. - 3 p. m. each day. Campers may come for one, two or all three days.
The theme of this year's art camp is "Art Around the World and Through the Ages" and children will learn about and explore indigenous art, such as aboriginal dot painting, Islamic geometric art forms, kente cloth (a silk fabric made of interwoven cloth strips, native to Ghana) designs, Japanese paper folding, felting, and Japanese anime. Art instruction, fun activities, as well as geography and other historical facts, will be included each day. Art Campers should bring a snack, a bag lunch, drinks and wear appropriate art-making clothes.
The cost for "Art Around the World and Through the Ages" is $50 for a SVAC member child/$60 for non-member child per single day; a 10 percent discount is offered for two days, $90/$100, and 20 percent discount for three days, $120/$140 (a 10 percent will apply for additional sibling campers). Space is limited and advance registration is strongly encouraged. A number of partial scholarships are available; please call SVAC Outreach Coordinator, Stacy Gates, at 362-1450, for more info and to register.
The Arts Center is also offering discounted 2010 Family Memberships ($75, a $15 savings) to first-time members when they register. SVAC's Kids Art Camps are a reflection of the Arts Center's mission to provide education and instruction, to all ages, throughout the region.
The Center is just off West Road in Manchester. Hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sunday 12 to 5 p.m. Visit any time at www.svac.org.
