Navy Major Shawn M. Swanson, son of Sharon La Goy of Warrensburg, was recently awarded a Bronze Star Medal while serving as battalion operations officer assigned to Regimental Combat Team Six, Second Marine Expeditionary Force, based in Okinawa, Japan. Swanson was instrumental in the planning and direction of 43 separate operations against anti-Iraqi forces. His efforts led directly to the capture of more than 120 enemy combatants, the elimination of several terrorist cells, and the discovery of more than 25 enemy weapons and munitions caches, according to a military press release issued this week. The Bronze Star Medal is awarded to those individuals who demonstrate heroic achievement or meritorious service in connection with combat operations against the enemy on behalf of the President of the United States, the statement said. Swanson joined the Navy in July 1992.
