HAGUE - Free tax counseling and preparation for taxpayers with middle- and low incomes, with special attention to those age 60 and over, is available from the AARP Tax-Aide Program through April 15.
People do not have to be a member of AARP or a retiree to use the service. Many local taxpayers from Hague, Ticonderoga, Crown Point and other nearby towns have already used this free tax preparation service for the 2008 tax year.
This program is locally sponsored by the Hague Chamber of Commerce and the AARP Foundation, in cooperation with the Internal Revenue Service.
Taxpayers should bring all their tax documents (W-2s, 1099s, receipts for deductions, etc) as well as a copy of last year's return. Be sure to bring photo ID as well. A new IRS provision for 2008 allows a credit, in addition to the standard deduction, for property taxes paid by homeowners. Also, a $200 credit is available from New York State for qualified volunteer firefighters and ambulance workers.
AARP Tax-Aide volunteers, trained in cooperation with the IRS, will offer help with personal tax returns by appointment in Ticonderoga on March 12 and by appointment on Mondays and Wednesdays until April 15 at the Hague Community Center, 9793 Graphite Mountain Road, Hague.
Call 543-6161 to schedule an appointment.
