NEWCOMB Teddy Roosevelts historic ride between Newcomb and the train depot in North Creek was commemorated on Sept. 7 with the 11th annual Celebration of Theodore Roosevelt.
The celebration got underway that Friday with an international welcome dinner for 6 international students and concluded Sept. 9 with a tour of the history of the ghost town Adirondac and the Adirondac Iron Works Blast Furnace.
There were many ongoing and various activities to enjoy. The craft fair has historically been one of the favorite events along with free wagon rides into the Santanoni Camp farm complex. The Newcomb Historical Building was open to those who wanted to learn about the history of the area and guided tours were available to various sites. Another feature event was a Huntington Nature Tour given by The Adirondack Ecological Center which included a lecture on the return of the moose, loons, and other topics as participants toured Arbutus Lake and the Huntington Great Camp.
Another favorite spot was the Overlook in Newcomb where visitors coule see the High Peaks Mountain Range. There, organizers held various demonstrations from the Newcomb Fire and Rescue Squad to wool spinning. Visitors could also have tested their knowledge by entering the TR Naturalist Challenge. While all this was going on, The Wild Life Puppeteers were entertaining the children and adults alike with ongoing shows. The day was topped off with a spectacular fireworks display Saturday evening.
On Sunday, the day started off with the 5K Ty Yandon Memorial Foot Race which was won by Lee Pollock from the Glens Falls area. Then the Newcomb Mountain Quilters raffled off a beautiful quilt which is one of their important fundraisers. For those who took advantage, there was a tour which started at the The Tahawus Club led by Paul Hai, who lectured on the old Adirondac village and the Adirondac Iron Works Blast Furnace. After the lecture, everyone went back to the Tahawus Club for refreshments.
Yes, there was something for everyone, making this another successful event.
