After starting out as second home owners in Jamaica, VT and then moving to the area permanently three years ago, Greg and Beata Hasaj recently purchased West River Tennis from long time owner Bob Cofer and family.
"Greg was a member of the tennis club and played there every week for the last two years, and was also taking part in USTA tournaments representing West River Tennis," Beata said in a recent interview.
"Our daughter Gabriela and son Maximo were also taking lessons at the club.
"Then last year, Greg started getting more involved through organizing group tennis lessons at the club for students at The Mountain School in Winhall, with the hope of not only creating more interest in the sport, but also to simply create another sports option for students.
"Then one day, all the club members received a notice from the Cofers that they would be closing West River Tennis," Beata added. "We felt that closing the club would be a big loss to the community, so we decided to take it over, renovate the facility and re-open it."
And the Hasaj's certainly have made a lot of wonderful improvements, including the renovation of new bathrooms, locker rooms and showers, a new gym and also improved equipment.
They have also added a new roof, entrance way and better handicap accessibility.
West River Tennis will now offer several new activities and services including tennis lessons and personal training.
For younger people they will also offer birthday parties, as well as a new "kids corner," offering toys and art supplies for youngsters, allowing parents to watch older siblings play matches or taking part in lessons.
The new and improved West River Tennis facility will also offer tennis camps during school vacations, an after school program and also an internet caf , where members and visitors can access the internet and enjoy a cup of coffee.
"Another change we are making is we will now offer our members unlimited use of our gym, whereas before members had to pay an additional fee to use the gym," Beata concluded.
"We feel this is a much better value for our members, even if they are not tennis players.
"We want to offer our club to the community as a place where people can meet, exercise, play tennis and most importantly, have fun in a friendly atmosphere.
"We are also open to suggestions from our members as our goal is to serve the community.
"We want our facility to be available at a time that is convenient for all our members to come and play tennis and exercise. Our doors will always be open."
