Imagine what it must have been like to see an elephant for the first time. Those great big ears and that long, long nose. The enormous size of the creature combined with that curious little tail. Their long round legs and unique flat feet seem so different from other creatures. Certainly, the elephant stands out in the animal world. What would you think the first time you saw one? For many people, that is the same kind of wonder they have when they first encounter a Christian. They seem like strange people. They talk differently than those around them. They dont frequent the same places as others do. Their ideas and values seem strange compared to the rest of the world. The question has to be asked: Are these Christian people really just aliens from another planet? Or are they just like everyone else? In case you have been wondering that same question, let me answer it for you. Christians are just like everybody else. They value the same things in life as non-Christians. They enjoy their families and desire the best for their children. They love to work hard and to be a part of their communities. They make great neighbors. They love this country. They eat the same kinds of foods, drive the same kind of cars, and shop at the same grocery stores as everyone else. But there is one difference that distinguishes Christians from non-Christians. They have come to peace with God, and received Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. The Bible teaches that All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23). It also teaches that The wages of sin is [eternal] death, but the gift of God is eternal life (Romans 6:23). Romans 5:8 tells us God demonstrated his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. This is the message that Christians have heard, and they have believed. The Christian has understood that all of man is guilty of rebelling against a perfect, sinless God. As a result of this sin, man deserves to die. But God sent his Son Jesus Christ into the world to die in mans place. The Christian follows what is taught in Romans 10:9, That if you confess with your mouth, Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. That is how and why the Christian is different. He sees the world in a completely different light. Many people have said that Christians think they are better than everyone else, because they say they have been saved by God. But if you were to ask a Christian, he would surely tell you, that it wasnt until he realized just how lost he was, that he finally came to understand the grace of Gods in his life. Christians dont think they are better; they are the ones who have come to a sobering reality of just how bad they really are. Rev. Nathan Dick is pastor of the Community Baptist Church in Panton, Vt.
