Ticonderoga fell behind early and lost in the quarterfinals of the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Class C boys basketball tournament March 8 at SUNY-Plattsburgh. Section II champion Mechanicville jumped out to a 15-2 lead and went on to a 57-36 victory over the Sentinels. Mechanicville led 31-13 at the half. Ticonderoga had trouble with Mechanicvilles press in the opening minutes, turning the ball over several times. Mechanicville capitalized, hitting three quick three-pointers to open up a big lead. The Sentinels battled back in the second half, cutting the deficit to 13 points in the third period. Mechanicville answered with a 7-0 run to end the stanza, though, and ice the game. Paul MacMillan led the way for the Red Raiders with 14 points, and Pat Marra had 11. Hunter Denno paced the Sentinels with nine points. Sentinels advance Ticonderoga defeated Section X champion Brushton-Moira, 63-56, in the opening round of the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Class C boys basketball tournament March 7 at SUNY-Plattsburgh. Trailing in the final quarter, Ti used its size and strength advantage around the basket to come back and claim victory. The Sentinels closed the game on a 23-11 run, taking the lead with three minutes remaining. Hunter Denno hit three three-point shots and led Ticonderoga with 18 points. Point guard John Molina added 14 points for Ti, while Jake Kelly dominated in the paint with 12 points for the winners. Ti took an early 12-8 lead, but Brushton-Moira seized control of the game behind guard Justin Poirer. Poirer nailed five three-pointers and scored 18 points as Brushton went on a 26-16 spurt to grab the lead. He finished with 31 points. As the game went on, though, Ticonderogas big men began to assert themselves. Matt Streeter and Jesse Clark combined for 10 points to combine with Kelly under the rim.
