TICONDEROGA Lee Berube will be the talk of North Country runners this fall.
The Ticonderoga senior enters the 2007 cross country season as the top-ranked runner in the state after finishing second in last falls New York State Public High School Athletic Association Class D championship race. Since then hes on championships in indoor and outdoor track.
But while Berube is the headliner, hes not the only talented runner on the Sentinel roster. Seniors Mike Lonergan and Eain Tierney are back along with juniors Jared Best and Brendan Carberry. All of them reached the state championship race last season.
Rounding out the 2007 Ti team are David Cook, Alex Durkota, David Mallon, Dustin McCallum, Jarrod Sammis, Alex Walters, Ben Chapman, Alex Moser, Mike Barber, Jay Berube, Joey Bevilacqua, Josh Cook, Kevin Densmore, Pat Lonergan and Matt Nolan.
A year ago the Sentinels won the Section VII Class D championship and posted a 12-6 Champlain Valley Athletic Conference record.
We have a large varsity cross country roster and the depth should serve us well throughout the season, Coach Brian Kiely said. I have been happy with the early practices and expect us to be competitive in the CVAC and the Section VII meet in Class D.
Lee Berube returns to lead the team and he will be competing at the highest levels of New York State high school running, he added. We will have four meets at home and I hope people will come out to see the kids compete. I believe this will be an exciting year.
Kiely, who has been coaching the Sentinels since 1983, will be assisted by Jay Wells.
