TICONDEROGA -The town is currently working to modernize its outdated zoning law.
The Ticonderoga town zoning law hasn't been substantially updated for more than 20 years.
The revisions are expected to allow more types of businesses in many parts of town, and bring the law into conformance with the town comprehensive plan passed by the Ticonderoga Town Council in 2006.
The current zoning law is largely derived from suburban-style zoning of the 1960s, and the newly-formed Ticonderoga Zoning Revision Committee, made up of business and agriculture representatives and interested citizens, is working to draft a revised law that will be more appropriate for a small, rural and tourism-oriented town.
The town zoning map is also being updated, so district lines will largely follow property boundaries. That means that many pieces of land that are now in more than one zoning district will be in just one district, eliminating uncertainty about where the zoning district boundaries are located.
The committee will be working on the revisions into spring 2010, and will prepare drafts of each section for public review and comment. A public information meeting on the zoning districts and map has been scheduled for 7 p.m., Jan. 11 at the Ticonderoga Community Building auditorium.
