TICONDEROGA-Softball and baseball fans will have a chance to help the Ticonderoga Best Fourth in the North committee.
The group planning the annual community July 4th celebration will hold a softball tournament and Yankees-Red Sox ticket raffle to raise money.
The Best Fourth in the North co-ed slow pitch softball tournament will be played Saturday and Sunday, May 21 and 22, at the Putnam ball field.
There will be two divisions - youth for players ages 12-18 and open for ages 14 and older. Each team must have at least 10 players and include at least three women.
It is a double-elimination event.
Interested players can call 321-4246 for more information or to register.
The Ticonderoga Best Fourth in the North committee has also announced a raffle for tickets to the Boston Red Sox - New York Yankees game Sept. 25 at Yankee Stadium.
Only 300 raffle tickets will be sold, and three winners will be selected.
Tickets, $25 each, are available from any committee member, at Century 21 and at the Ticonderoga Area Chamber of Commerce office.
The drawing will be held July 4.
Each year the Ticonderoga Best Fourth in the North is a multi-day affair featuring music, amusement rides, games and vendors in Bicentennial Park.
July 4th will feature the 25th annual Montcalm Mile road race, the Independence Day parade and fireworks at 9:45 p.m.
The Montcalm Mile will race along the parade route at 1:45 p.m. It will be followed by the bed race and then the parade at 2 p.m.
The Montcalm Mile will start in front of Wicker Ford on Wicker Street and proceed down Montcalm Street to the finish at the Heritage Museum.
A record field of more than 200 runners competed in the 2010 Montcalm Mile. Race director Jim Cunningham hopes to top that mark this year.
It's a downhill course that attracts most of the region's top athletes. Also attracting runners is the fact the race is run minutes prior to Ticonderoga's annual Fourth of July parade, which means hundreds of spectators line the course offering encouragement.
Registration starts at 1 p.m. at Wicker Ford. For entry information contact Cunningham, 26 Amherst Ave., Ticonderoga (Email email@example.com).
Race information can also be found online at the LaChute Road Runners Club website - www.lachute.us
Entry fee is $8 for adults and $4 for children younger than age 16.
Awards will be presented to all finishers. Age group results will be posted on the web site. www.lachute.us
