Officials from Tupper Lake have issued water use restrictions for village and town residents.
In a notice released early Wednesday morning, officials said that watering will only be permitted for uptown area residents on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. That area includes Santa Clara Avenue.
For downtown area residents, from Santa Clara Avenue to the junction, watering will only be allowed on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays.
Watering in both areas is restricted on Mondays.
Village Clerk Mary Casagrain explained that the village and the town have instituted these restrictions in recent years in order to preserve groundwater.
"We've had one of our main filters down," she said. "We're exploring well water, but that won't be in place for this summer season."
Casagrain says the village and town have had to undertake significant "backwashing" to get water to local customers.
"And all the heavy rain has so much gunk clogging our filters, we can't put out all that water for lawn use," she said, noting that once a planned municipal groundwater project gets under way, such restrictions will no longer be necessary.
These water restrictions will remain in effect for the entire summer, or until further notice.
