WESTPORT - A potential unidentified person may soon finalize the purchase of several hundred acres of land currently owned by Alexander "Sandy" Treadwell.
At the Dec. 28 meeting of the Westport town board, the quorum voted to contract with attorney Joel Russell in matters concerning the potential land sale and uses.
"Joel put together the zoning and planning laws that led to the town being granted Class B classification by the Adirondack Park Agency," town supervisor Daniel Connell said. "That means that we have been given jurisdictional authority by the APA in the hamlet, and we are one of the few communities that has an approved zoning plan, so we can work directly with the person on this matter."
Connell said he was not at liberty to discuss any specifics, including the name of the potential buyer, but did say that the two sides have and continue to meet.
"The purchaser has met with us to discuss, in generalities, what he would like to do with the property and how the town's zoning laws would impact that use," Connell said. "We then contracted to bring Joel on as the lawyer because he has the intimate knowledge with the zoning laws. He has the experience, and we want to make sure that we do everything right by the zoning laws."
Connell said he feels the potential uses of the property, which went on the market over a year ago, would be beneficial for the town as a whole.
"I believe that this would be a fantastic project for the town of Westport," Connell said. "We are working with them through normal channels to make it so we can hopefully help this sale go through."
