BRANT LAKE - A local taxi company, with the help of some sponsoring businesses, is striving to make the communities in Northern Warren County safer this year.
Brant Lake Taxi is offering free rides On New Year's Eve to residents of Brant Lake, Chestertown, Schroon Lake, Bolton Landing and Pottersville to and from local taverns or private parties.
The offer is good from 7 p.m. Dec. 31 to 4 a.m. Jan. 1.
Mike Turano of Brant Lake Taxi said Monday he and the company owners, Don Butler and Keith Wilkinson, established this Operation Safe Ride program to assure safety of local residents over New Year's Eve.
"We want people to be serious about not drinking and driving," Turano said. "We thought this would be a good way to get the message across."
Helping sponsor Operation Safe Ride are Chestertown businesses Adirondack Moonshine, Anywhere's Bar & Tavern, Buckman's Family Fuel, Deer Crossing Cafe, Green Mansions Bar & Restaurant, Luna's Pizzeria, Panther Mountain Inn and Upstate Insurance; Black Bear Restaurant of Pottersville; O.P. Frederick's of Loon Lake, Duffy's Tavern of Lake George; and the employees of Nice N' Easy in Chestertown.
Also sponsoring the effort are the North Warren Emergency Squad and North Warren Central School's chapter of SADD, both based in Chestertown.
Turano said he encourages people to make reservations for New Year's Eve rides to make sure they can get picked up and dropped off at the location of their choice within the North Warren area.
Those seeking information or to make reservations may phone 494-2507.
Brant Lake Taxi offers a variety of transportation services, and they've been in operation since April with a sedan and a minivan.
Those seeking to give gift certificates for rides may call the enterprise for information.
Turano said he and Brant Lake Taxi owners are looking forward to the holidays and meeting new clients.
"Operation Safe Ride is a way for us and our sponsors to give back to the community while providing a vital service," he said.
