Catamounts victimized by sweep OXFORD, Ohio No. 4 Miami completed a weekend sweep of No. 20 Vermont with a 4-1 victory in front of a crowd of 3,642 at the Goggin Ice Center on Saturday night. The Red Hawks used goals from four different players to improve to 2-0 on the season while the Catamounts dropped to 0-2. Seniors Nino Musitelli and Tommy Wingels along with sophomore Gary Steffes each scored even strength goals for Miami. Junior defenseman Alec Martinez added a 5-on-3 goal for the Red Hawks. Sophomore Jonathan Higgins (Stratham, N.H.) notched the second goal of his career for the Catamounts. Miami took a 1-0 lead at 9:25 of the first period when Musitelli scored the 13th goal f his career. The senior tipped in a shot by sophomore Jarod Palmer. The Womens team was at home, where freshman Saleah Morrison (Selkirk, Manitoba) had a goal and two assists to lead a balanced attack as Vermont topped Union, 4-1, in women's college hockey Saturday afternoon at Gutterson Fieldhouse. The Catamounts have won four straight to open the 2007-08 campaign, the programs best start ever, after winning only three games in each of the past two seasons. For the second straight game no Catamount tallied more than one goal. Also, Vermonts special teams were solid scoring twice on the power play in four attempts and adding a shorthanded goal while killing all seven Union extra-player opportunities. The Catamounts dominated the action in the first period with the first 11 shots on goal for both teams, The last shot was a goal by Stephanie Tewksbury (Marshfield, Mass.), her second in as many games, to open the scoring at 18:04. Midway through the second stanza, Chelsea Furlani (Colchester, Vt.) created a turnover while killing a penalty and rapped one home from the goal mouth to make it 2-0 at the second intermission.
