A vacant home caught fire in Paul Smiths early yesterday afternoon.
Fire and rescue personnel got the call at about 1 p.m. Thursday. Officials say no one lives at the large residence on Keese Mills Road.
Crews from the Paul Smiths-Gabriels and Saranac Lake volunteer fire departments pumped water from the nearby St. Regis River to battle the major structure fire.
The Bloomingdale Volunteer Fire Department provided mutual aid in the form of two trucks and 11 members, although they were turned back while responding. Lake Placid sent one tanker truck to the scene and one pumper truck to the Saranac Lake station for standby service.
It's suspected that a lightning strike may have sparked the blaze. Some crews were later called back to the scene because the fire started up again.
