The Vergennes Area Chamber of Commerce, a division of the Addison County Chamber of Commerce, is hosting Vergennes Day on Saturday, Aug. 28 in Vergennes. On the Friday evening before, the event kicks off with a street dance featuring the music of "The Hitmen" from 7 to 11 p.m. Vergennes Day is a celebration of city and community and can be enjoyed by all ages. Activities on Saturday take place between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. The day begins with a pancake breakfast at the Vergennes Fire Station from 7 to 10:30 a.m. At 9 a.m. the Little City 5K and 10K races and walk will start in front of the Vergennes Opera House. Registration begins at 8 a.m. from Steven's House on the corner of Main and North Green streets. More information and registration is available at www.runvermont.org.
The bandstand in City Park will be occupied throughout the day by several musical groups: Vergennes City Band at 10 a.m.; Vermont Ukulele Association at 11 a.m., Rehab Roadhouse at 12:20 p.m., The Galaxies/Take Two at 1:15 p.m., and L.C. Jazz at 2:30 p.m. City Park is also the site of more than 75 crafters' and vendors' booths offering fine handcrafts, locally made products, food and more.
From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. children can participate in games and face painting by the Boys & Girls Club at the Boys and Girls Club at 55 School St. Also for kids, the Vergennes Area Rescue Squad and Safe Kids Addison County will be at Bixby Library from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to inspect and fit a limited supply of bike helmets. The Vergennes Fire Department will again entice kids with their ever popular bubble pit.
Vergennes Union High School is the site of the antique vehicle, tractor and engine show, with a "People's Choice Award". Go and see this nostalgic display (between 10 am and 4 pm) and vote for your favorite! The Vermont Army National Guard will be located at VUHS with an array of Army vehicles and offer a Baseball Pitch and Soccer Kick to test your skills. Also at VUHS will be the Champlain Valley Flyers, flying radio-controlled airplanes between 10 a.m. and noon.
New this year at VUHS will be rides in a tethered hot air balloon (weather permitting).Sponsored by RE/MAX Champlain Valley Properties, there is a nominal fee of $5 per person/$20 per family which will benefit future Vergennes events.
Free horse-drawn wagon rides are available from 10 a.m. to 4 pm from Clay Country Farms and beginning at 1 p.m., the Lions will be selling barbequed chicken in City Park. The Rotary's Rubber Duckie Race (3:30 p.m.) is a tradition at the Basin. Tickets are available at the booth in City Park.
