NEWCOMB - Upcoming holiday programs at the Adirondack Park Agency Visitor Interpretive Center (VIC) in Newcomb will include a natural ornaments workshop, a trail walk, a balsam sachet workshop and a movie matinee.
On Saturday, Dec. 13, the Natural Ornaments Workshop will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The VIC staff will help participants come up with ideas while they make natural ornaments to take home. The ornaments will be made with pinecones, seeds, milkweed pods, leaves, beans, tree bark, twigs, flowers, and much more. People must drop in before 1 p.m.
Preregistration is not required, and the cost is $3/family and free for Adirondack Park Institute members.
On Wednesday, Dec. 17, visitors are encouraged to participate in the new API Friends Walk at 11 a.m. Join staff from the Adirondack Park Institute (API), the friends group of the VICs, for an informal walk, ski or snowshoe on the Paul Smiths VIC trail system. Afterwards, warm up inside the Center with a cup of hot cocoa. Registration is not required for this free program, and it is open to the public.
"You don't need to be an API member to join us during the API Friends Walk at the VIC," said API Executive Director Martha Van der Voort. "This is simply an informal get-together for folks who love nature. Remember, friends don't let friends stay inside!"
Days before Christmas, on Saturday, Dec. 20, the Newcomb VIC will host a Family! Program, the popular Balsam Sachet Workshop, from 10 to 11 a.m. Enjoy an Adirondack scent during the holiday season with a sachet made from balsam needles. Learn some interesting tidbits about the balsam fir tree, and then make your own balsam sachet. Materials will be provided.
Preregistration is required, and the cost is $2/sachet, free for Adirondack Park Institute members.
Visitors are encouraged to bring a bag lunch on Dec. 20 if they want to participate in the sachet workshop and the afternoon program, Holiday for the Birds, which will be held from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Join the VIC staff for a look at how to make your back yard a bird's favorite wintering spot, and take home a feeder to get yourself started.
Preregistration is required by Dec. 16 by calling (518) 582-2000. The cost is $5/person and $3/Adirondack Park Institute members.
On Saturday, Dec. 27, the VIC will show the movie, "Arctic Tale," from 1 to 2:30 p.m. in the multipurpose room. Watch a polar bear cub and a walrus pup as they struggle for survival in a beautiful icebound world.
