ROUSES POINT - John F. Huchro Jr., a member of the village board of trustees, has died.
Huchro, 71, reportedly passed away in his sleep June 20.
"It was quite a shock," said Village Mayor George A. Rivers, who received the news early Monday.
Huchro, a retired educator and administrator, was currently serving a two-year term on the board. He had previously held trustee positions on the board from 1984-1987 and from 2000-2005.
Those who attempted to attend the village board's regularly scheduled meeting at the Rouses Point Civic Center Monday night found a notice on the door informing them of Huchro's death and notice the board meeting had been held earlier that day in reaction to the sudden news. Village Clerk Carol Hanfield said the traditional items such as paying of the bills were all that were approved. Additional items originally scheduled to be discussed Monday night will be postponed to the board's next regularly scheduled meeting Tuesday, July 5.
Though saddened by the loss of Huchro, Rivers said he must now conduct a search for someone to fill Huchro's seat on the board, which will expire in March 2012.
"John's going to be thoroughly missed. He was a perfect gentleman and very knowledgeable and very caring," said Rivers. "He cared about this village immensely and I will miss him. The village will miss him."
