The Downtown Rutland Partnership has proposed that Wales Street in Rutland be changed from its current status as one-way, northbound street to a two-way street. Several proposals on the table will involve the loss of a few parking space.
In one Partnership proposal, four parking spaces in front of the Rutland Herald newspaper building and three spaces in front of the Rutland VFW would be eliminated. Another option eliminates 15 downtown parking spaces.
Several downtown merchants, shoppers and residents surveyed by this newspaper voiced their dislike of the plan.
The Rutland Board of Aldermen will listen to the six plans proposed by the Partnership at a meeting Sept. 29. The aldermen seem to like the plans despite local grumblings.
"It’s part of a study for downtown that encourages businesses downtown, revitalizes downtown—it is a good step," alderman Sharon Davis told reporters recently.
A final decision will be made by the Rutland Traffic Safety Committee by early 2013.
