WARRENSBURG-After enduring delays, due to courts being snow-covered or wet far longer than normal years, the varsity tennis team of Warrensburg High School is now engaged in competition.
Coach Terri Palermo said Tuesday that her talented players were on the courts at Echo Lake Camp Monday for the first time this season, and the players are very enthusiastic and willing to work hard. Up through last week, the team practiced in the school gymnasium.
"Our tennis players are a great bunch of athletes," Palermo said. "We are all enjoying our time together."
In the tennis matches, the players earn seedings, and comparable players are matched up from each team. Seeded top player at season opening was Sophomore Tyler Wilcox, followed - in order - by Dan Cobb, Matt Arehart, Jami Ladd, and Ed DiPietro. Competing in doubles matches are Savannah Mosher, Makayla Hill, Jaci O'Brien and Ethan Schmidt. The team is rounded out by Maggie Danna, Rebecca Persons, Tessa Acuna, Chris Robinson, Jacob Hayes, Jacob Thomas, Brian Britton and Kaitlyn Cousineau.
Palermo said that if her team members are not seeded for individual matches or involved in doubles competition, they play exhibition matches.
"I try to give all the team members a chance to play," she said.
The tennis team just played its first match Monday at Whitehall and lost 2-5. As of early this week, a match-up was scheduled for Tuesday at North Warren (see story below) and Wednesday at Lake George.
