LAKE GEORGE - The Warrior Girls Basketball Team's steamroller series of victories this season encountered a setback as the talented, balanced group experienced its first loss of the 2008-09 season.
Lake George lost to unbeaten Stillwater 59-39 in a non-league matchup Dec. 20.
Stillwater charged through the first quarter, racking up 16 points to Lake George's 5. Although Lake George tried hard to whittle down the lead, they never got the deficit reduced to less than 10 points.
A loss like this provides valuable experience for the players, Warrior Coach Rob Tefft said.
"Stillwater is a very good team with size and good guard play," he said. "They take advantage of every mistake a team makes."
Regardless of the outcome, several players performed well, Tefft said, particularly the 10th graders.
"Our Sophomores are making good strides - like Caroline Murphy, she provided a lot of sparks," he said. "We got a good game from Junior Sarah Anderson with nice rebounding, good defensive play, and Senior Brittany Jones played a tough game with a lot of hustle."
The team's record is now 4-1 overall, 3-0 in the Adirondack League.
Next up is the Queensbury tournament Friday night and Saturday, competing against larger schools, including 2007 Class B Section II runner-ups Hoosic Valley. If the Warriors win Friday night, they'll continue to compete on Saturday.
Then on Wed. Jan. 7 at 7:30 p.m., they've got a matchup against Argyle at ACC, which is followed on Fri. Jan. 9 with an away game against Corinth .
