RUTLAND Water and sewer fees are due Nov. 20, according to the Rutland City Treasurers Office. This includes ratepayers in the City of Rutland, Rutland Town and Alpine users. The most recent bill was delivered to ratepayers Oct. 1, giving ratepayers almost 50 days to pay the bill before a penalty of 5 percent is applied. For bills not paid by Dec. 20, an eight percent collectors fee will be applied a total of 13 percent on late balances, as well as a risk of shut off. Water and sewer ratepayers have been used to seeing a due date 20 days from the date of the bill arrival knowing that penalties would be applied 30 days thereafter. Showing the due date as the city has done with this recent bill is accurate and in compliance with the city ordinance, according to Rutland City Treasurer Wendy Wilton. We hope the new format will end speculation about the actual due date and make it very clear when penalties are applied for late payers and help them avoid risking shut off.
