WARRENSBURG Following in the footsteps of the 2007 Burghers team that fought all the way to the state tournament finals, the 2008 local Varsity field hockey team has made its own mark in game action this past weekend. Warrensburg beat two tough contenders in winning its own annual field hockey tournament Sept. 5-6. In the first contest Friday, Warrensburg defeated Schuylerville 2-0, with Carol White scoring off two penalty corners in the first half. On Saturday, Warrensburg faced Greenwich, which had beaten Hudson Falls 1-0 in the semifinals. The first of the Burgher goals against Greenwich was scored in the first half by Carol White, followed by a goal from Abby Roth who gave Warrensburg an edge early in the second half. Roths goal was answered by Samantha Linnetts successful swipe with 10 minutes left in regulation play, sending the game into overtime. At about 5 and a half minutes into the second overtime, Carol White clinched the victory with an unassisted goal against Greenwich, which is annually very competitive in the Wasaren League. Burgher Coach Mary ann Bump said she was pleased with the early-season strength from a team that lost six seniors since they fought just a stroke or two away from the state championship in 2007. Im pleased with the effort, Bump said. The younger players are filling in appropriately as they should, and the bench is improving. Bump said the team not only played with keen competition, but they had fun doing it. Most of the team members have played field hockey since they were in 4th and 5th grade. Theyre playing hard, but theyre having fun doing it, she said. This is a good combination.
