September 2009 weather was very pleasant, with drier than normal conditions and slightly cooler than normal temperatures, giving us a very nice introduction to Fall.
The average high was 68.2 degrees and the average low was 46.2 degrees, giving us an average temperature of 57.2 degrees - 1.2 degrees below normal. The highest temperature, 78 degrees, was recorded on Sept. 6 and the lowest temperature, 34 degrees, was recorded on Sept. 20 and 21.
There were scattered frosts around the area on these dates, although not here in Riparius, as the river does have a moderating effect on our temperatures, giving us a slightly longer growing season. There were 238 degree days bringing the seasonal total to 325.5
Rainfall for the month was 2.04 inches, 1.51 inches less than normal. This was the third driest Sept. on record and it followed the third wettest Aug. on record. The driest Sept. was in 1998, when only 1.77 inches fell, and the wettest September was in 1983, when 6.45 inches were measured. Our seasonal total is now 33.49 inches, 2.15 inches above the normal of 31.34 inches. There were only 9 days of measurable rainfall, most of which were at the end of the month. The greatest amount, 0.73 inches fell on Sept. 28.
The river rose to its highest level, 4.50 feet, on Sept. 29 and its lowest level, 2.61 feet, on the Sept. 17.
