For the second month in a row, the average temperature of April 2010 was the warmest on record. This may have inspired some to start gardens and put away warm clothing. However, one should remember that we can still have temperatures in the low 20's in May.
The average high temperature was 59.7 degrees and the average low was 34.6 degrees, giving us an average 47.2 degrees - 4.4 degrees above normal and the warmest on record. The previous warmest April was in 1987 when the average was 47.0 degrees. The coldest April was in 1982 degrees when the average was 38.0 degrees. The coldest temperature of 26 degrees was recorded on April 14 and 15 and the warmest temperature of 77 degrees was recorded on April 3. There were 535 degree days, bringing our seasonal total to 7039.
April 2010 continued the trend of below normal snowfall with only a trace recorded here in Riparius, although higher elevations did receive measurable snow on at least two days. The trace recorded was 4.4 inches below normal. We have had 10 years in the last 30 when we have had only a trace or less in April. Our seasonal total remains at 49.7 inches.
Melted precipitation was also below normal with only 1.82 inches measured - 1.80 inches be low normal and the 5th lowest on record. The driest April was in 1999 when only 0.63 inches was recorded. The wettest April was in 2005 when 7.58 inches was recorded. There was measurable precipitation on only nine days with the greatest amount of 0.74 inches falling on the April 17. Our seasonal total is now 13.22 inches - 0.81 inches above normal.
The river reached its highest level of 6.25 feet on April 1 and its lowest level of 3.54 feet on the April 27.
