WILMINGTON - Winter is in full swing as Whiteface welcomes back the 2011 Budweiser Challenge Jeff Abbot Memorial Cup Wednesday Race Series. The Budweiser Race Series is a six week community alpine race series, sponsored by Plattsburgh Distributing, and welcomes skiers and riders of all ages and abilities.
During competition, participants will be racing down the red and blue courses on the section of Lower Valley trail, each competitor taking two runs, with the better of the two being used in the day's results. All teams entered are required to have a minimum of five racers, meeting a requirement of two women per team, and a maximum of 20 people. Race day lift tickets will be $35 for all competitors.
In terms of scoring, women will be broken into two even categories, and the men will be separated into three categories. Categories will not be divided using age brackets, however; keep in mind if you have competitors over 60 years of age they will receive an extra point, and those over 70 will earn two points. Team points will be allotted beginning with first place receiving 10 points and moving down from there to one point. The team with the most points at the end of the race series will be the recipient of the 2011 Budweiser Challenge Jeff Abbott Memorial Cup.
Following the race, the fun will be moved into the Cloudspin Lounge in the Base Lodge where racers can find the day's race awards, music, complimentary bar food and specials on Bud and Bud Light. While at Whiteface earn the chance to win some exciting prizes from a few of our generous local ski shops - Cunningham's Ski Barn, Maui North and Viking Ski Shop.
The 2011 Budweiser Challenge Jeff Abbott Memorial Cup Race Series will be held in honor of Jeffrey A. Abbott, Owner/President of A & M Beverages of Malone, who passed away suddenly June 17, 2009.
