Henry Best, a boatman who plied his trade in this general area, committed suicide near Whitehall by cutting his throat and wrists with a razor and bleeding to death. Unmarried, he had settled all his affairs and sold his canal boat after which he deposited $1,500 in the bank, walked out of town and killed himself with the razor.
He had frequently asked policemen to take care of the razor, as he feared he would do injury to himself, but he was not taken seriously. After doing the deed he closed the razor and carefully put it back in his pocket.
