Joseph F. Bohunicky, Jr., 34, of West Nyack, was arrested by New York State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation at Haverstraw for leaving the scene of a fatal accident in town of Schroon on November 20, 2011.
A West Nyack man has been arrested eight months after his alleged involvement in a fatal car crash.
The New York State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation at Haverstraw arrested Joseph F. Bohunicky Jr., 34, of West Nyack, on July 17, for leaving the scene of a fatal motor vehicle accident on Nov. 20 in Schroon.
Bohunicky was indicted as a result of an intensive investigation by Lewis State Police and Troop B Collision Reconstruction Unit.
On November 20, 2011, Thomas LaFountain and Mary Morrissey, both of Mechanicville, were traveling northbound on Interstate 87 en route to visit their sister in Au Sable Forks. At approximately 7:20 a.m., in the town of Schroon, the 2000 Chevrolet Prizm sedan operated by LaFountain was struck in the rear by a 2001 Toyota Camry sedan operated by Bohunicky, who fled the scene.
As a result of the collision, Morrissey suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to a police report, several witnesses came forward after seeing media coverage about the collision. These accounts, as well as evidence obtained by the collision reconstruction unit, led to the recovery of the Toyota Camry in Rockland County and the identification of Bohunicky as a suspect.
Bohunicky was arraigned on Wednesday, July 18, before Judge Meyer in Essex County Court and was remanded to the County Jail in lieu of $5,000 cash bail or a $10,000 bond. Bohunicky is scheduled to re-appear in Essex County Court on October 4, at 2 p.m.
