Memorial Day weekend is the real kick off to the summer season here in Willsboro and Essex. Saturday, 20 members of my family met at a restaurant just off Exit 18 of the Northway to celebrate the graduation of my Granddaughter, Christie Flanagan, from four years of college. We are very proud of her accomplishments and wish her well as she pursues a career in Medicine.
Here in Willsboro, two big birthday parties this past Sunday: Rona Hams was surprised as her family and friends honored her 85th birthday at the Congregational Church. The same day the friends and family of Sid Couchey celebrated his 90th birthday at the Essex Community Church. This was great fun and a wonderful tribute to two great people. The Methodist Church and the Catholic Church last weekend events were well attended. Another bright spot was to see a bright display of impressive old time cars parked at the Sportsman's Diner, they were out touring the North Country on a beautiful day from New Hampshire, they are known as the "Old Time Cruisin Group."
The Local Memorial Day event is always a great event and this year the speaker was Kenda James. Hopeful you noticed Gilliland Cemetery has been spruced up. Glad the School Budget and elections all passed.
Many thanks to the Local Beautification Committee for brightening up our community as they planted the plant barrels around town. I would also like to remind people how hard our local business owners work to keep their businesses open and goods available for us. The local grocery stores, the pharmacy and all other businesses are fighting hard economic time and really need the purchasing power of the locals to help them stay open. Also thanks to the Smith House and Local Doctor's and Dentist offices for expanding their services to make it easier to get health care right here in our local town,. These can only stay if we as a community support them.
Very proud of a couple more of our local youth as they are reaching for a higher education. Derrick Pierce has completed his education to become a pharmacist and will soon be employed with Kenny Drug Store Chain. He is the son of Yvonne & Kevin Pierce. We join his parents in congratulating him on a hard job well done. Another hard working student is Ashley Alden who is attending St. Lawrence College. She made the Dean's list this Spring semester with a 3.81 gpa on a 4.0 scale. Great job for both of these students who are alumni of Willsboro Central School.
