When Willsboro Central School opens its doors to students Tuesday, Sept. 6, they will also be welcoming a special guest.
John White, the U.S. Department of Education’s Deputy Assistant Secretary for Rural Outreach, will be visiting the school as part of his “Back to School Tour.”
“We are absolutely looking forward to his visit,” Stephen Broadwell, Superintendent, said. “He will give some opening remarks and have a chance to see the school.”
Broadwell said that the schedule for White’s visit to the school is still being worked out, but that the plan was for him to arrive at the school at 9 a.m. and stay for about one hour.
The school will also be recognized by the organization College For Every Student (CFES), who again have honored Willsboro as a School of Distinction.
Broadwell said that White’s role with the Department of Education fits well with his visit to the small Northern New York School.
“He will be able to relate with us about the challenges that rural school face,” Broadwell said. “He can tell us about what he sees as best practices for small schools and what he sees the future of rural schools being.”
Broadwell said that, while White can help bring ideas for several topics that affect rural schools across the nation, one of the biggest challenges facing many local schools was unique to New York State.
“When it comes to the new tax cap, that is something that is more of a New York thing than a national issue,” Broadwell said.
Broadwell said that he, the faculty and the staff are looking forward to the first day of school the day after Labor Day.
“This could be very exciting for our first day of school,” he said.
New faculty announced
Students at Willsboro will also get the chance to meet new members of the faculty when they return to school on Sept. 6.
In the physical education department, teacher Michael Douglas will be replacing Mike St. Louis, who retired after 26 years with the school.
Nicole Gillespie also joins the faculty, teaching high school special education.
Faces in new places include, Wally Vanderhoff will be returning to the classroom from his previous duties as the Dean of Student, as Charmaine Flynn will be the Dean of Students.
