WILLSBORO Willsboro Central School bowlers struck history last week as they held their first home match against Ticonderoga on Jan. 4. WCS started a bowling club for the 2007-2008 school year. The team is coached by Dave Lee, and consists of six girls and 17 boys in grades 7-12. The club meets twice a week at the Willsborough Bowling Center. For this year, the club is hosting 10 scrimmages against Champlain Valley Athletic Conference teams, but Lee hoped the WCS team would enter the official league next year. Bowling Center owner Dale Ferris said he approached Westport, Elizabethtown-Lewis and Willsboro schools about starting bowling teams. Willsboro accepted. I like it it gives the kids that arent good in basketball something to do in the winter, said Club member Joe Ferris, a senior. We need a different sport, something outside of basketball. Club member Alexis McVicker, a junior, agreed that having another sport option was part of the appeal. She explained that joining the team gave her more chances to bowl, since it was free. She said bowling was enjoyable and a good stress reliever. We love to have fun and more girls should come play, said McVicker. The first home game earned the Willsboro club a split with Ticonderoga, with each taking 2 points.
