ADIRONDACK A retired school teacher has taken her love of storytelling from a verbal activity to a book. JoAnn Flammer of Adirondack taught elementary school on Long Island, with a dream of someday living on a lake. Now retired, she and her husband Lee live on Schroon Lake in Adirondack. She has just published her first book, The Last Wish, for children ages eight to 12. I taught reading to first and second graders, she said. I would write stories for the kids to read and they always said I should make my stories into a book, so I finally did! Flammer said her passion in teaching has always been helping young, struggling readers to enjoy reading. She volunteers at North Warren now, where she reinforces reading and writing skills in elementary students. I love working with struggling kids, and the hardest thing is to find a book that wont frustrate them, she said. The Last Wish isnt too long and there is lots of space on each page. Its designed for young readers and isnt overwhelming. The Last Wish is about a young man who doesnt believe the stories he hears about wizards and dragons until he gets angry at his little sister and wishes her into the dragons cave. Young readers will see familiar words they have heard but not seen and build their vocabularies and strengthen reading skills. Flammer is a freelance writer for teaching magazines, and enjoys writing. A preview of The Last Wish can be found at her web site, joannflammer.com. The book is available at the Adirondack General Store, Brant Lake Variety or online at Amazon, Barnes and Noble or Lulu. For an autographed copy, email Flammer at firstname.lastname@example.org.
