A submerged vehicle was found the morning of Aug. 29 in the Great Chazy River in the Clinton County town of Altona.
Two people died after their vehicle was pulled into the Great Chazy River here, according to state police.
A search of the area resulted in the discovery of two deceased persons: Mikita C. Fox, 23, of Wikemikong, Ontario and Danine R. Swamp, 24, of Nedrow.
Autopsies to determine the cause of death were scheduled to take place Aug. 30 at Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital Medical Center, in Plattsburgh, New York. The investigation into this incident is ongoing.
The investigation so far indicates that Fox and Swamp were travelling north bound on the Devils Den Road, in the town of Altona, in a 2011 Buick, according to state police. They pair failed to observe that the roadway, traversing a bridge over the Great Chazy River, had partially washed away as a result of the intense rain. As the vehicle entered the bridge it was pulled into the river as a result of the extreme current and water level. The vehicle was carried approximately 1,000 feet down stream. After an intensive search Fox and Swamp were located deceased, both out of the vehicle.
