To get more women volunteers, Bike Recycle Vermont is hosting its first-ever series of workshops exclusively for women this winter.
These Wednesday evening sessions have brought women into the shop to learn different aspects of bike repair and maintenance. Topics covered included bike anatomy and tools, tires and tubes, and brake adjustments. On the last gathering before the holidays, five women worked side by side as they each overhauled a front wheel hub.
The workshop series will continue throughout the winter and into the spring. More challenging topics such as wheel truing will finish up the first series this January. A new seven-week session will start the first week in February on Tuesday evenings. All workshops are open to women of all ages with no or minimal experience.
It's a fun, non-intimidating learning environment especially for women. We seek to empower women by helping them feel more comfortable and capable when working on bicycles, with the ultimate goal of expanding our base of women volunteers.
