CUMBERLAND HEAD - When battling cancer, one of the last things a person wants to do is think about cleaning. That's where X-Treme Clean comes in.
The professional cleaning service, which formed in 2005, is part of a unique nationwide initiative to offer free cleaning services to women with cancer. The initiative, known as "Cleaning for a Reason," is something owners Cathy Bashaw and Carol Robert were introduced to through their membership in the Association of Residential Cleaning Services International.
"We thought it would be something good to be a part of," Bashaw said of Cleaning for a Reason. "We're at a time in life where we have a good business and would like to give back to the community through a variety of things like that."
Cleaning for a Reason allows for up to four free house cleanings per patient, to be used however they choose," said Bashaw.
"They could get a monthly cleaning for four months, or a weekly cleaning for four weeks, for example," she said.
Robert herself knows how scary cancer can be. She was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2005. And, though her condition was corrected with surgery, Robert said she could "only imagine" the amount of stress people must have going through chemotherapy and radiation treatments.
"I was very lucky with my cancer situation. I didn't have to go through chemo," said Robert. "I go to the cancer center on a regular basis for check-ups and I see people in all stages of their treatments, some are in wheelchairs with oxygen. I can't even imagine what they're going through."
"When you're undergoing cancer treatment, you are very stressed out," said Bashaw. "And, for the most part, the responsibility of house cleaning falls on the woman. So, even if she had to spend her time trying to find a service, it still causes her more stress."
"That's why I feel that this service we offer is a help to any patient to help sweep away their stress," she added.
The process of arranging a free house cleaning through Cleaning for a Reason is simple, said Bashaw. It involves filling out an application with some basic questions and furnishing a physician's note verifying a diagnosis of cancer. Those interested may simply visit the Cleaning for a Reason Web site at www.cleaningforareason.org or call 1-877-337-3348.
However, due to the high demand nationwide to receive services through Cleaning for a Reason, those applying directly though the organization may experience trouble getting through to main telephone number. In that case, Bashaw said X-Treme Clean is ready to help.
"Cleaning for a Reason has been in more of a demand since it was on Oprah, so if someone is calling the national number and that doesn't work, call us," she said. "We can take their information and get through to Cleaning for a Reason for them."
