WILMINGTON Whiteface Mountain will host the third annual 5 Kilometer Downhill Mountain Bike Race Sunday, Aug. 31 at noon. Sponsored by the National Off-Road Bicycle Association (NORBA) and part of the Gravity East series, the race carries a $5,000 pro purse top men and women finishers receive equal pay. Top-three amateur finishers will also have a shot at several thousand dollars in bike-related merchandise. The race features the longest mountain bike competition in the East, with a course dropping 2,476 feet. In 2006, James Ford, of Chappaqua, NY, finished the course in over six-and-a-half minutes. Typical downhill races take less than three minutes to complete. Last year, on an even longer course, Derrick Nobman of Oyster Bay, NY, need over seven minutes to finish, while only seven racers broke the eight minute barrier. The race course will be marked five days prior to the event, and available for training seven days a week including race day. Participants can register at www.active.com until Aug. 30 at 9 p.m., for just $28. Racers can also sign-in at Whiteface from Aug. 29-31 until 11 a.m. for $35. The competition will be timed by All Sports Events and an awards ceremony will be held after 3 p.m.
