TICONDEROGA-Voters have approved the Ticonderoga Central School District's 2011-12 budget.
A revised $18,997,947 budget passed, 545-542, in voting June 21.
A proposed $19,085,916 spending plan was rejected by voters, 499-443, May 17.
The initial budget proposal included reductions in textbooks, the district newsletter, library, internal auditing, computers, transportation, athletics, summer school, the annual Whale Watch trip and other items totalling $242,319.
The Ticonderoga Teachers Association agreed to forgo most of its contractual wage increases. Those concessions totalled $320,000. Teachers were to receive a 5.73 percent wage increase but agreed to waive 85 percent of their raises and skip step increases in their salaries. They also agreed to freeze extracurricular activity pay.
Those concessions, though, weren't enough to prevent job loses. The elementary school principal position, an elementary reading teacher, a kindergarten teacher and a teaching assistant are being eliminated through attrition. Two teachers and a teaching assistant are being eliminated by lay off. Three other teachers and a teaching assistant will to become half-time positions.
District administrators have agreed to a pay freeze.
After the initial budget plan was rejected, the board of education trimmed $88,000 from the defeated proposal to come up with the revised $18,997,947 budget that calls for a 3.9 increase in the tax levy.
The revised budget proposal cut another $57,000 in teacher costs from a late retirement and a maternity leave. The remainder of the $88,000 in additional cuts came in equipment purchases, snow removal, radios and a computer for the central office.
While cuts dominated the proposed budget, there were a few spending increases. Fuel costs for next year are anticipated to increase $25,000 and employee retirement costs are up 14 percent.
Ticonderoga has 904 students and employs about 200 people full- and part-time.
