WILLSBORO On Sunday, Oct. 14, the Willsboro Barkeaters traveled to Bennington, Vt. for a Rugby Clinic hosted by Southern Vermont College (SVC) and provided by the New York Rugby Football Club (RFC). The highlight of the day was a U-19 boys game between the Barkeaters and New York RFC U-19s. The Barkeaters season is in the spring, but this unusual opportunity arose, so the Barkeaters, without any practice or fitness training, gathered a portion of their team and completed their side with players from SVC and the New York Club. An evenly matched, extremely physical game was enjoyed by all, and the Barkeaters started strong taking a five nil lead, but New Yorks fitness and athleticism countered halfway through the first half and they led 12-5 at the half. However, the Barkeaters came back in the second half with grit and experience and were able to outscore their opponents and exhibit staunch defense to shut out New York in the second half and hold on for a 17-12 victory. Notable performances by Willsboros Kaleb Provost, Nathan Henrichs, and Joseph Ferris highlighted the contest, while Hooker Andrew LeBlanc (Saranac Lake) joined his former high school team after playing a game on Saturday with his current club, Castleton College. The game marked the return of Fullback Kyle Russell (Willsboro) to the Barkeaters, and Scrumhalf Will Price (Peru) converted a try. The Barkeaters 2008 season will begin next February.
