BURLINGTON Hot new Burlington band Fragile Zoe brings together some of the finest local musicians for groove-oriented instrumental funk and sublime fusion charts. This talented quartet shows that Burlington is a city with a jazz soul in a special FlynnSpace jazz cabaret concert on Saturday, February 9 at 8 p.m. Headed by jazz flutist and composer Patricia Julien (UVM assistant professor of music) -- and joined by Tom Cleary on the keyboards, Alec Julien on the guitar, Joe Englert on bass, and Caleb Bronz on drumsFragile Zoe has already won acclaim for being both listenable and danceable. The quartet plays original tunes and pieces by Mike Stern, Bela Fleck, John Scofield, Jeff Lorber, and others. Its powerful precision playing with a soul. Patricia Julien, a 2005 Kroepsch-Maurice Excellence in Teaching Award-winner, has appeared in concert at Carnegie Hall, Weill Recital Hall, Alice Tully Hall, and The Kennedy Center, and has toured the eastern United States, Canada, and Europe. While living in New York City, she performed frequently at Birdland, The Knitting Factory, The New Music Caf_CBGBs, and The 55 Bar. She has also worked with artists including Roy Hargrove, Ari Hoenig, Randy Brecker, Ron Elliston, Atilla Engin, and Kenny Wessel. Recording as the Patricia Julien Projectwith Alec Julien, bassist Jeremy Harlos, and drummer Ari Hoenig -- she released the album Glee in 2006. Of the CD, Casey Rea, former music editor for Seven Days, praised, Julien is a gifted composer and soulful performer. Her eloquent phrasing is intricate and inviting, and her arrangements are captivating.... Its great to hear original jazz with such a convivial spirit. Im looking forward to hearing another set.
