WESTPORT Organizers are preparing for the 159th Essex County Fair, which is scheduled for July 25 through July 29.
Fair spokeswoman Bertha Rand said the Adirondack Agricultural Fair spotlighted the regions heritage and also highlighted current farming activities. New happenings this year include a horse show tournament, baby animal barn, bingo, poultry costume show, rocketry, rooster crowing contest, riding classes in the draft horse show, and a youth commission day with extra games, skits on stage and art show.
Were doing more hands-on things which people can do that don't cost a lot of money, said Rand.
The fair, organized by the Essex County Agricultural Society, has a variety of regular activities including live music, open horse shows, harness racing, 4-H demonstrations, tractor and truck pulls, garden tractor & ATV pulls, youth challenges and a Midway featuring rides and games.
Animal shows go on daily. These show feature both 4-H and open classes, and are an exhibition of the training, effort and bondage with the species each exhibitor is showing. Cattle, sheep and horses are on display, including a rising class in the drafted horse shows a first for the fair. Animal lovers can also explore the new baby animal barn, where young livestock will be on display.
