The ability to read is a key factor in finding employment.
With that in mind, the Ticonderoga Area Chamber of Commerce will host a community awareness event Tuesday, March 26, 4 to 6 p.m. at its office at 94 Montcalm St.
The program will be presented by Literacy Volunteers of Essex/Franklin Counties.
“This event will raise awareness of adult literacy education in our communities and across the nation,” Maria Burke, director of literacy volunteers, said. “People can come find out what types of programs we offer, who we serve, and how you can turn a page in your neighbor’s life by increasing their reading skills.”
Light refreshments will be available for all those in attendance. Literacy volunteers will also have free giveaways.
Chamber members, the business community and Ticonderoga area community members are all welcome to attend this outreach event.
“We are happy to partner with Maria and literacy volunteers as a committed community organization and TACC member,” Matthew Courtright, chamber executive director, said. “We encourage community members, business and organization leaders to stop by the chamber office to learn more about the services provide by literacy volunteers and the difference they make in the community as well as support their efforts.”
Literacy Volunteers of Essex/Franklin Counties recognizes the importance of providing skills training, employment opportunities, and resources for those currently seeking employment, Burke said.
“Many of those searching for work also lack the basic literacy skills to be successfully employed and self-sufficient,” Burke said. “By participating in the workforce training and education with the Ti-Alliance, Ticonderoga Area Chamber of Commerce, CV TECH, the North Country Workforce Investment Board, OneWorkSource and many other community partners, literacy volunteers can support low-literacy learners by providing a trained volunteer tutor who will help them improve academically.”
