TICONDEROGA - Runners braved freezing weather to kick off the New Year in Ticonderoga, racing in the annual Resolution Run.
The 3.1-mile run, which started in 6 degree weather, featured a four-way tie for first place.
Jay Wells, Lee Gabler, Lee Berube and Jesse Berube Jr. were clocked in 17 minutes, 26 seconds. All are former Ti High runners. Wells is now a track and cross country coach at the school, while the others are members of the SUNY-Geneseo running program.
Marge Huseman was the first woman to finish in 24:36.
The first walker was Peg Carroll in 34:21. Walkers completed a 2.5-mile course.
Also running the race was Frank Woodard of Champlain, who ended 2008 by running the First Night Run in Saratoga Dec. 31 and stopped in Ticonderoga to start 2009 with the Resolution Run. He won the 60-69 age group in 24:11.
A highlight of the event was the awarding of the annual Duane Crammond Memorial Scholarship. The $1,000 award went to Lee Berube during post-race ceremonies.
Given by the LaChute Road Runners of Ticonderoga, the scholarship is in memory of Duane Crammond.
Crammond, the valedictorian of the Ti High Class of 1999, was a cross country and track champion in high school. He went on to become an honor student at RPI, where he majored in engineering and was captain of the college's cross country team. He was also the leading distance runner on RPI's indoor and outdoor track teams.
After graduation from college, Crammond dominated local races. In 2003 he won the Montcalm Mile in Ticonderoga and the Race the Train event in North Creek. He was third in the Whiteface Uphill Run in Wilmington, fourth in the Prospect Mountain Road Race in Lake George and fifth in the Lake George to Bolton Adirondack Distance Run. He capped that season by winning the Adirondack Marathon in Schroon Lake.
He died in a car accident in 2005 at age 24.
