WILLSBORO Rick's Place has re-opened in a new location with a new name, but owners Sarah and Rick Sayward are striving to keep Willsboro's history in mind with the business. Rick's Place Restaurant and Pub opened in its new location next to the Willsborough Bowling Center on Nov. 23. The move has been in the works for over a year. Sayward said the new location offered more space, better parking, and was able to have the look of an Adirondack Lodge. "When we started to design the inside, we wanted to pay tribute to the people who build our community. We decided to put pictures of old Willsboro and Reber on our tables, and sealed them with epoxy. Each table table tells a story about a different part of town," said Sayward. Using a Honeybee Foundation grant, Ronald Bruno of the Willsboro Heritage Society reproduced historic pictures of the community, along with creating a caption to explain the images. Themes include downtown, the Reber region, schools, industry and historic events like the 1913 Willsboro flood. The restaurant is working on expanding its menu with home-cooked fair. Roast turkey, roast beef and roast pork meals are served daily, and Saturday evenings are special prime rib nights. Sarah Sayward makes more of the homemade desserts, with Karen Ashline supplying homemade pies. Of course, popular fast-food items like Rick's signature burgers are still being cooked up. Pizza is another popular item, with many people ordering take-out. "The food is excellent," said frequent customer Butch Flora, who was dining out recently with his wife, Bonnie. Both recommended the clam chowder. Sayward said business has been good since re-locating, with many curious locals stopping by to see the new interior. There's also a pub area. The larger location means Sayward has had to expand his staff, now employing six people. It's a family operation, with Sayward's children working in the restaurant when they're home from college. "What we're trying to do is be very family oriented - a relaxing atmosphere, homey - and just like you're having dinner at home," said Sayward. Sayward added that he was working in close cooperation with the bowling center to host special events. So far several birthday and Christmas parties have been held at the adjoining locations. The restaurant operates Tuesday through Saturday from 11:30 a.m.-9 p.m. For more information, call 963-4371.
