With and 0-for-3 over the weekend in sectional finals, the winter sports season in the Valley has officially come to an end, even though we are still following in the Moriah Vikings boys team in the Times of Ti coverage area as they play Madrid Waddington tomorrow at 1:45 p.m. on the campus of SUNY Canton. A win sends them back to the Glens Falls Civic Center, where they last played in 2003.
I covered that weekend, as Moriah won their semifinal game late and then fell victim to Mike Hoyt and SS Seward in the championship game. Now, they look to return by earning revenge against the team that knocked them out of the playoffs a year ago.
As for the Valley, several athletes made it to the state stage. Dylan Baker and Kenny Rivers returned AuSable Valley to the state wrestling tournament. Mike McDonald of AVCS and Gabi Yeager of Willsboro represented Section VII at the bowling tournament. Gavin Friedrich of AVCS went back to the state swimming championships, and Jonathan Gay of Westport continued his run of state competitions by earning a spot at the indoor track and field championships.
As for basketball, well, some years you get two teams going to regional play, including one making a trip to the Final Four (AVCS and ELCS girls last season), and some years you’re all done by the first Saturday and March, and this was the latter. Three teams made the sectional finals: Elizabethtown-Lewis girls (15-6), Westport boys (15-6) and AuSable Valley boys (15-5).
The Keene boys (13-5) and girls (14-4) basketball teams both made the semifinal round, as did the AuSable Valley girls team (14-5) before falling in heart-breaking fashion to Saranac. The Westport (11-8) and Willsboro (4-15) girls teams were ousted in the quarterfinal round, as were the Willsboro (7-12) and ELCS (5-15) boys teams, with the Lions earning an play-in win against Johnsburg.
So that puts a wrap on the season, but not the post season as we have started to dive into the process of selecting the boys and girls basketball All Valley teams. A total of 24 players (12 boys, 12 girls) from AVCS, ELCS, Keene, Westport and Willsboro will be chosen for a team that we feel would represent our region well if they were a travel team, for lack of a better term, along with a coach for each team.
The All Valley girls team will be announced Thursday, March 13, with the boys team announced Thursday, March 20.
Again, congrats to all on a great season!
