Sophomore Dylan Baker had a tough matchup in the opening round of the NYSPHSAA state wrestling tournament, but someone he had seen before (and taken down) in last year's state champion at 106-lbs., Luis Weierbach.
The first period opened with Weierbech grabbing a leg and recording a takedown on a single before Baker was able to get out of bounds for a 2-0 lead 10 seconds in. Baker was able to scramble out of a pair of pin attempts at the 35 and 55 second marks of the period. After almost escaping twice only to be thwarted by Weierbach, the third pin attempt was a charm for the former state champ, who was able to turn Baker over at the 1:22 mark and get the referee to slap the mat at the 1:28 mark.
Baker will next wrestle in the consolation bracket later today, while Kenny Rivers will be the final match of the opening round at 285. We will have more later
